Captain Michael Tross sat inside the bridge of the “Dawn Cracker”. He stared out into the black nothingness that was slip space as he had his AI “Crauss” calculate their exit vector. His face was set into a glare with his forehead showing the many wrinkles that came with experience with tactical command accompanied with a plain offsetting frown. He stood up and unwrinkled his uniform before looking back out at the void that surrounded the UNSCS fleet “Trekking Titan”. They received the distress signal, while performing a patrol of an uninhabited system. The “Colonial Former’s” newly installed slip space drive had quit on them and covenant were at their doorstep. What kind of luck that ship must have to have landed in this kind of predicament.
“Crauss, how much longer until we reach the coordinates? I hate to think what those freaks would do to a crippled ship.”, Stross said with a light tone of empathy in his voice.
“Sir, I believe they would shoot them with their heavy plasma torpedoes then board the remains if they can to search for any information or survivors.”, Crauss remarked with a quirky attitude, “And we’ll be another fifteen minutes.”
Crauss was a newer generation AI, put on the lead ship of the fleet to act as a co-captain of sorts on the ships. He was an older man wearing a crown and sitting a gold throne, he gave off a royal air. As such he had a bit a smug attitude, believing the truth was always best raw. Subtlety wasn’t a strong suite and it often got on Tross’ nerves, like right now for instance. He gave the AI his trademark glare before turning on his com to the rest of the ships.
“All ships, prepare for re-entry into normal space soon, have all weapons hot for when we exit people. The distress signal said there was only one Covenant ship, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see at least three. You know the drill, Shiva’s first then hit them with the mac’s. We ain’t letting them take another human life today.”, Tross yelled.
“I already informed the fleet about our soon reentry and your tactics, but nice speech captain. It sounded very professional, the word “ain’t” isn’t actually a word. ”, Crauss said with smirk.
Remind myself to have his memory wiped about this conversation. Stross sat back into his chair as the void continued to fill the screen for another agonizing ten minutes filled of wonder and anticipation. Finally the void began to peel apart and the Regidranus system started to fill the front view screen. Stross eyes widened as he saw the truth before him, one Covenant ship was bad, three was worse. But this was a whole lot worse.
“Sir, might I advise we say our goodbyes?”, Crauss said.
Six Covenant ships were coming into existence near the moon in Lios’ orbit, as the “Colonial Former” tried to out run a seventh above Lios’ surface. The Covenant fleet was closer to the UNSCS Carrier and would be on it before the “Trekking Titan” could reach them, unless they acted fast.
“All ships, engage the enemy. Protect those people at all costs!”,
Stross said before ordering his crew to bring up a firing solution for the Covenant ships. Crauss stared at the covenant ship with cold blue eyes, he tapped into the arm of his throne before
looking back at Stross.
“Ready when you are sir.”
“Fire.”, Stross said coolly as his experience as a captain and his past battles in space began to take over and wash away any sense of fear he displayed earlier.
Suddenly, the archer pods spat out a multitude of Shiva missiles that raced againt the black void leaving grey, distorted, finger-like, smoke trails behind them as they sped towards the Covenant Frigate that was chasing the “Colonial Former”. Human lives were at stake, that’s all that mattered to Stross now.
Meanwhile, within the orbit of Lios’ only moon, the Covenant Destroyer “Virtuous Faith” pulled through the hole in slip space and flared its covenant plasma launchers. The fleet master Fradus Marrudee took in the scene briefly, he didn’t need long to see what was unfolding before him. A single enemy ship was being chased by one of the Covenant’s many Frigates. The opposing forces reinforcements had entered the battle and the lead ship had opened fire. Fradus saw his first priority, to aid his kin and wipeout the heretics. He signaled one of his crew to move them forward and the ship’s thrusters roared to life, giving off a bright blue light from its engines. It pulled away from the fleet “Infinite Light” as the last of the five ships winked into existence and they began to move forward in unison to fight with their other two comrades.
“My brothers, we have arrived. The “Infinite Light” shall aid you in burning the creatures from the face of the earth.”, Fradus spoke through the ship’s com and into the “Righteous Vengeance”.
He then ordered an elite manning a holo display to the right to fire off a plasma torpedo and the elite went to work. Fradus watched as the enemy missiles continued to race through space towards the “Righteous Vengeance” as the anti-projectile laser aboard the vessel came to life and began shooting the missiles down. But there were too many and the missiles would overcome the ship, if not destroy some of the boarding crafts that the “Righteous Vengeance” began ejecting. Fradus wouldn’t allow that to happen, he waited as the front most launcher on his ship began to glow red as it gathered plasma. The plasma went from the crimson red to a slightly tinged orange to a blinding blue before erupting outwards in its magnetic field and Fradus watched as it arced through space and intercept a handful of missiles, causing a chain reaction resulting in about a third of the missiles being destroyed. He smirked as he spoke into the com.
“All ships, move to take on the enemy reinforcements, we shall dominate the sky and finish off any who survive our judgement.”, he ordered.
Fradus watched as the rest of the fleet moved in and also watched as enemy fleet began to move forward to engage them. Yes, come and give us a challenge worthy of legends. For this is what fate demands of us.[i/]
